The idea of the Tigers was conceived in Sicily in December 1860 by US Army Major Wheat of New Orleans, who was in Sicily fighting in the Unification War with General Garibaldi. Wheat was a veteran of the Mexican-American War. In 1861, six ships left for New Orleans.

Tiger Rag was written by Nick LaRocca of New Orleans in 1912.
Nick’s dad was from Salaparuta, which hosts the Nick LaRocca Jazz Fest annually.
