Giuseppe Garibaldi and the American Civil War

On May 11, 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Marsala to begin the unification of Italy as France, Spain, and Austria were seeking to conquer regions of Italy.

Garibaldi believed a unified Italy was needed to stop the taking of land from the five Italian kingdoms. By March 17, 1861 Garibaldi’s Italian mission was complete.

In September 1861 Abraham Lincoln offered Giuseppe Garibaldi a Brigadier General position. Garibaldi’s response: only if Lincoln made the war about ending slavery and made it a Major General position.
